Truffle Dinner at Oliveto

Just got back from Oliveto, where we enjoyed their Truffle Dinner.

We had:
-- Pan d'mie crostini with wild snails, wild mushrooms, and leeks
-- Warm salad of lamb sweetbreads, artichokes, cauliflower, and black truffles
-- Ravoli of Spiny lobster and lobster roe
-- two lovely main dishes, one with a home-made sausage, and the other with vitello
-- a 16g white truffle to shave over these

And every single dish was a marvel. The sweetbreads were the best of the lot, followed closely by the lobster ravioli. Everything tasted amazing. Everything.

And yet, we found ourselves a little disappointed. Each dish was perfectly delicious and savory without the shaved truffle; in fact, all of the dishes were so strong and delicious in their own rights that the truffle was hard to distinguish. The truffle really only shone through when Yoko buttered some of their lovely bread and shaved some truffle on the bread. Apart from that, there was simply no point to buying the truffle.

That said, we thoroughly recommend the experience*, just without buying the extra truffle.

*thoroughly recommend, of course, if you've got the serious bux. No lie, this is the single most either of us has ever paid for dinner. Forewarned, etc.
