Civilian Take on Battlestar Galactica
On watching the most recent episode of Battlestar Galactica, Yoko's insightful comment was: "Why don't they have the equivalent of SCUBA gear readily available?"
We know that they do have environmental suits - in the pilot, when Tigh had to order a section of the ship opened to space to put out a fire, he said of the crew in there "if they followed their training they had their suits on." We also saw Apollo wearing a space suit after ejecting from the BlackBird in "Ressurection II."
Understood. The question Yoko was raising was why didn't the commander of the Pegasus have something like that on him when he went into the section of the ship leaking atmo. While an airmask would not have protected him from the cold, it would have given him enough oxygen to perhaps make a last dash for the door.
Erik - I re-watched this episode today. There's one sentence that goes by so quickly that I didn't catch it until today. The commander is discussing the situation with the enginner down there, tells him he's going in, then this happens:
CoP: "Breathing gear?" (phrased like "Where is it, I'll be needing it in there.")
Engineer: "We used it all up fighting the fire."
So the writers actually did anticipate the question, but the explanation was easy to miss because it went by so quickly.

Ah, gotcha. Good question. Sounds like a continuity glitch put in for dramatic reasons.

Aha! Fair enough. You're right, we missed that part.
