The Fountain is the story of a man who loves his wife and does not want to lose her. He has the potential power to keep her, but the price could be missing out on the moments he has left with her. But of course, this is Darren Aronofsky, so if you think that's all there is to it, you're in for a surprise. No, Aronofsky wraps up this tale in metaphor and fantasy, and it can be a little confusing as to what's really going on. For Yoko and me, this sorted itself out, and we really enjoyed the experience. Mind you, we're weird.
In short (too late), if you like metaphysical metaphors mixed in with man struggling through the basic human condition, you'll (probably) dig this. If reading the previous sentence made you yawn or rush to the next sentence, The Fountain is probably not for you.
I read a review in The Independent Weekly where I felt the reviewer missed the entire point, but I'll put that in Rot13 so as not to spoil. You can find a decent Rot13 encrypter here.
