Quick post to let folks know that Yoko's family seems to be all right. They're all in the south of Japan, so they haven't been directly affected by this disaster.
Our hearts go with the people of the Tohoku region where the tsunami hit.
UPDATE: Live Japanese news (in Japanese) here:

The chirp-chirp, chirp-chirp is the alarm that another quake has hit; a ringing bell means it's over M6.

We were thinking of Yoko's family, good to hear they're all right.
Am watching the coverage on NHK World.
Thanks, Tom!
It seems like the most immediate macro problems are the Fukushima Daiichi reactor and the widespread fires in Kesennuma.
A minor positive is that the USS Ronald Reagan was on maneuvers in the Western Pacific (I believe they were on the way to participate in drills with the S. Korean navy), so they should be on hand sometime tomorrow to help. Not under illusions that one carrier's helicopter contingent can make any major contribution, but with such widespread devastation every little bit helps.
