Why?

Bill Gates is arguably the richest single human being on the planet. And yet his workflow and workspace are the least imaginative I've seen.

His big productivity boost? Three screens.

I mean, are you kidding me? The man's got an entire software industry at his fingertips, and the most he can come up with is three screens?

If I had that kind of money, I'd have a Very Comfortable Chair, a wall-bank of linked monitors at a Very Comfortable Resolution, and something other than ugly venetian blinds to look at.

If you're wondering why M$ is all about the money and never about the consumer, here's your answer.

He has others to do his thinking for him.

I suspect that the blinds are down specifically for the photo. If the outside of the building is visible in the background, a resourceful person can figure out which office belongs to Gates. This would create opportunities for espionage or worse.

Well, some of the richest people are also some of biggest tightwads you'll find. Hence, springing for some of the luxuries may just not be on his agenda.

Though, from his house and charitable giving, I don't think that's the problem.

Its also possible that in Gates' working style, minimalism/Spartaness is a means of maximizing creativity by reducing distractions as much as possible.
