The President used his veto to deny funding to the troops because he dislikes that the bill as presented would have established a timeline for the withdrawal of troops from Iraq. Said he:
"It makes no sense to tell the enemy when you plan to start withdrawing. All the terrorists would have to do is mark their calendars and gather their strength and begin plotting how to overthrow the government and take control of the country of Iraq."
(Washington Post, may require a login/pwd and/or cause cancer.)
Who does the President think we're fighting in Iraq? Rainbow Six? There is one thing, and one thing only, that the various and sundry Iraqi insurgents agree on, and that's getting US troops out of the country. Once we're gone, there is _no_ indication that Iraqis will continue to allow foreign insurgents like the so-called Iraqi Al Qaeda to continue to operate inside their country.
Also, Mr. President, if the Democrats give you a war funding bill and you refuse to sign it, it is you, not the Democrats, who is denying the troops the equipment they need. However, as my father the former Naval Commander points out, the military is never without the ability to makes purchases, so this is all empty rhetoric anyway.
