So I'm looking out my window here at work, and I notice an airplane zipping West. That's hardly unusual, but what's tripping me out is that I can see a shadow of the contrail on the cloud layer above the contrail. Help me, Internet! What am I seeing here?

Best (half-assed) guess? The cloud layer isn't actually above the contrail; it's just sufficiently transparent that the contrail can be clearly seen through it. Your eye is playing a trick on you, making you think the contrail is closer than the cloud layer.
Ah, interesting; my brother says the same thing. A kind of parallax optical illusion, wot?
Your brother is clearly a man of discerning intellect and unparalleled taste.
Not to mention modesty.
